Zürich, Lake Constance & the Northeast
Switzerland's biggest city, Zürich, is not only efficient, it's also hip. The locals are hard-
working early risers but, come clock-off time, they throw themselves wholeheartedly into a
festive vortex.
Much of the ancient centre, with its tall church steeples and winding lanes, remains intact.
Winterthur, to the northeast, is a cultural powerhouse, with major museums.
Northeastern Switzerland is the place to tiptoe off the map and back to nature for a few
days. Here country lanes unravel like spools of thread, weaving through Appenzell's patch-
work meadows and past the fjord-like waters of Walensee.
From the thunderous Rheinfall to the still waters of Lake Constance, nature is on a grand
scale here. Completing the storybook tableau are castle-topped towns like Stein am Rhein
and Schaffhausen, their facades festooned with frescos; while in St Gallen, the abbey lib-
rary literally catches your breath with its rococo splendour.
