Leukerbad
The road that zigzags 14km up from Leuk past breathtakingly sheer chasms and wooded crags is a spectacular
build-up to Leukerbad. Gazing up to an amphitheatre of towering rock turrets and canyon-like spires, Europe's
largest thermal spa resort is pure drama.
Lindner Alpentherme ( 027 472 10 10; www.alpentherme.ch ; Dorfplatz; thermal baths 3hr/day
Sfr23/28, with sauna village Sfr39/53, Roman-Irish bath with/without soap-brush massage Sfr74/54;
pools 8am-8pm, sauna village & Roman-Irish baths 10am-8pm) offers a twinset of pools - one in, one
out, both 36°C - with whirlpools, jets, Jacuzzi and mountain views you just can't get enough of. To lounge in the
traditional Valais Sauna Village - all wood and rustic cartwheels, with several saunas, mill, ice-cold stream and
herbal steam rooms - you must be naked. Equally invigorating is the Roman-Irish bath, a two-hour nude bathing
ritual.
Hourly postal buses link Leukerbad with Leuk (Sfr11.20, 30 to 35 minutes). These are near Salgesch and the
Rhône Valley.

VILLA CASSEL $$
( 027 928 62 20; d with breakfast/half-board Sfr160/210, dm with breakfast/half-board Sfr50/70;
mid-Jun-mid-Oct) Short but sweet is the season at this fabulous mountainside villa, the stun-
ning summer pad of wealthy Englishman Ernest Cassel who - so the story goes - had to
pay local farmers to stuff the bells of their cows with hay after their incessant ringing up-
set one of his house guests - a young Winston Churchill no less. Rooms today are simple
pine with shared bathrooms.

the alpages (pasture) up high in Riederfurka, this oasis of peace, tranquillity and Alpine
tradition has been around with the cows since the mid-19th century. Rooms are cosy, with
lots of wood, and the restaurant - hearty mountain fare - is one of the best on the slopes.
