CHEZ VRONY $$
( 027 967 25 52; www.chezvrony.ch ; mains Sfr25-60) Ride the Sunnegga Express to 2288m
then ski halfway down blue piste 6 to what must be Zermatt's cosiest, toastiest, tastiest ad-
dress on the slopes (Robbie Williams loves the place). Its dried meat, homemade cheese
and sausage - all organic - come from their own cows that graze away the summer on the
high alpine pastures (2100m) surrounding it. Advance reservations essential in winter.

WHYMPER STUBE $$

( 027 967 22 96; www.whymper-stube.ch ; Bahnhofstrasse 80; fondue Sfr25-27, mains Sfr22-43) An
advance reservation is essential at this legendary address, known for its excellent raclette
and fondues, both cheese and meat. Service is relaxed and friendly, tables are packed
tightly together, and the place has a real buzz.

Drinking
Still fizzing with energy after schussing down the slopes? Zermatt pulses in party-mad
après-ski huts, suave lounge bars and Brit-style pubs. Most close (and some melt) in low
season.
VERNISSAGE BAR
Offline map Google map
( www.vernissage-zermatt.ch ; Hofmattstrasse 4; 5pm-2am) The ultimate après-ski antithesis,
Vernissage exudes grown-up sophistication. Local artist Heinz Julen has created a theat-
rical space with flowing velvet drapes, film-reel chandeliers and candlelit booths. Catch
an exhibition, watch a Bond movie in the decadent cinema, then practise your 007 martini
pose in the lounge bar.
