Hidden Places
If you like the off-the-beaten path charms of Salgesch ( Click here ), there are many more hidden joys tucked away
deep in the little valleys between the jutting peaks of Valais:
1 VAL D'ENTREMONT & VAL FERRET
The St Bernard Express train from Martigny to Orsières branches south at Sembranch-
er, chugging along the Val d'Entremont through classic Alpine scenery to the Italian
border. Orsières marks the beginning of pine-brushed Val Ferret. It's a 1¾-hour walk to
Champex (1471m), a mountain village with a beautiful glassy lake.
2 VAL D'HÉRENS & VAL D'AROLLA
These thickly wooded valleys hide many peculiarities and pastures mown by silky
black Hérens cattle. The road wriggles up from Sion through Vex and then Euseigne,
passing the wondrous Gaudí-esque rock pinnacles Pyramides d'Euseigne.
