ADVANCE PLANNING
» Five months before If travelling to any of the top ski resorts like Zermatt or Verbier dur-
ing peak season (Christmas to March), nail down your accommodation.
» Three months before For summertime Matterhorn excursions, beat the crowds by lining
up your ideal Zermatt room early.
RESOURCES
» Valais Tourism ( www.valais.ch ) The region's tourism authority.
» Verbier Booking ( www.verbierbooking.com ) Book early during peak winter skiing sea-
son.
» Ski Zermatt ( www.ski-zermatt.com ) Skiing info plus live cams of the Matterhorn.
GETTING AROUND
» Train The major towns are all connected by efficient train service (for Zermatt you have
no choice!). Zermatt is also the western terminus for the popular Glacier Express train (
Click here ) , which runs east all the way to St Moritz.
» Car Travelling around the Valais is a grandiose experience thanks to the astonishing road
links - high mountain passes, snowbound in winter, and masterfully engineered tunnels - it
shares with neighbouring Italy. For exploring intriguing hidden valleys, you'll want a car.
BE FOREWARNED
» Parking Some popular areas such as Zermatt, gateway to the Matterhorn, are car-free
and you have to leave your car in remote parking areas and catch a train in.
» Peak Seasons Christmas to March and July and August are busy, busy, busy any place
that's beloved for winter skiing or hiking under azure blue summer skies. Plan accordingly.
