JANINE IMESCH, LONGTIME ZERMATT RESIDENT
1 MATTERHORN MUSEUM
Learn all about what Zermatt was like in 1860 at the Matterhorn Museum ( Click
here ) . Among the many things you can see here is the broken rope from the first as-
cent by Edward Whymper. In 2015 the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Mat-
terhorn will be celebrated all over the village.
2 IN EDWARD WHYMPER'S FOOTSTEPS
Want to learn even more history of mountaineering? Then visit the historic Hotel
Monte Rosa ( www.monterosazermatt.ch ) for its guided tours, which take place every
Thursday. Step into the era of Belle Époque in Zermatt and experience Whymper's
time in town and hear many fascinating tales.
3 MATTERHORN GLACIER PARADISE
There's no need to wait until winter to touch snow. Head up to this very popular attrac-
tion, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise ( Click here ) , which at a soaring 3883m is a must.
There is also a glacier palace where you can see ice sculptures. Don't miss the platform
where you can admire almost 40 peaks that are higher than 4000m. You can even see
all the way south to Italy. And on the way up there's an audio guide that explains about
the Alpine world around you. It's a pain-free way to learn.
