In-Depth Information
is followed by a series of four cable cars to the top (including one that spins). Here you'll
find a fantasyland of glaciers and jagged peaks. Look southwest to see the backsides of
the fabled Jungfrau peak and its mates.
Back in Lucerne for another day, board a lake steamer to start a fun-filled journey that
includes a cog railway (a train that uses gears to climb) and puts you atop the comparat-
ively modest (3) Mt Pilatus , where all of Lucerne and its lake stretch out before you.
INTERLAKEN TO SCHILTHORN Best of the Alps
Look across the calming waters of Lakes Thun and Brienz from the ideally located (1)
Interlaken as a sort of sensory respite from what's to come (although you'll want no res-
pite from the bubbling nightlife). Catch the train to (2) Grindelwald and plan your assault
on the Alps, which loom almost overhead. Get a morning train up the hill to (3) Kleine
Scheidegg , a barren crossroads 2000m up. Change to the legendary train through the
mountain to (4) Jungfraujoch , which at 3454m is one of the most famous high spots on
the planet; glacier-clad peaks spread out before you.
Back in Kleine Scheidegg, take the winding hiking path down the mountain to (5)
Wengen , a cliffside village with Alps in all directions. Spend a night or two and wander
the myriad trails . Take a train to (6) Lauterbrunnen and see glacier-fed waterfalls .
Now head up another mountain by cable car to Grütschalp , where you change to a
mountain train to (7) Mürren , for another angle on the earth's most beautiful pageant.
Finally take cable cars to (8) Schilthorn where, on a clear day, you can see everywhere
you've just been.
