In-Depth Information
EuroAirport ( 061 325 31 11; www.euroairport.com ) serves Basel (as well as Mulhouse in
France and Freiburg in Germany). Located 5km north in France, it has flights to and from
a host of European cities.
Train
Basel has two main train stations: the Swiss/French train station SBB Bahnhof, in the
city's south, and the German train station BBF (Badischer) Bahnhof, in the north.
Two trains an hour run from SBB Bahnhof via Olten to Geneva (Sfr70, 2¾ hours). As
many as seven, mostly direct, leave every hour for Zürich (Sfr31, 55 minutes to 1¼
hours).
Getting Around
Buses run every 20 to 30 minutes from 5am to around 11.30pm between the airport and
SBB Bahnhof (Sfr3.80, 20 minutes). The trip by taxi (
061 325 27 00, 061 444 44 44) costs
around Sfr40.
If you're not staying in a hotel in town, tickets for buses and trams cost Sfr2, Sf3.20 and
Sfr8.50 for up to four stops, the central zone and a day pass respectively.
If You Like...
Chocolate
If you like chocolate (and who doesn't?), you'll love visits to some of Switzerland's most famous chocolate brands:
1 CAILLER
( www.cailler.ch ; Rue Jules Bellet 7, Broc; adult/child Sfr10/free; 10am-6pm Apr-Oct, to 5pm Nov-
Mar) In business since 1825, Cailler has modern facilities these days, and offers anec-
dotes, samples, demonstrations and a sensory overload (no doubt exacerbated by the
chance to buy factory seconds a mere 80m up the road). The factory is 2km north of
Gruyères, in Broc.
