Don't Miss
Altstadt
The medieval Old Town in the heart of Basel is a delight. Start in Marktplatz, which is dominated by the astonish-
ingly vivid red facade of the 16th-century

(town hall). A walk about 400m
west of Marktplatz through the former artisans' district along Spalenberg leads uphill to the 600-year-old
Spalentor
city gate, one of only three to survive the walls' demolition in 1866.
The narrow lanes that riddle the hillside between Marktplatz and the Spalentor form the most captivating part of
old Basel. Lined by impeccably maintained centuries-old houses, lanes like Spalenberg, Heuberg and Leonhards-
berg are worth a gentle stroll.
