ADVANCE PLANNING

amazing cheese. Need we say more?
» One month before Give up on the diet and vow to start one after your trip. You don't
want to skip on delicacies like Gruyère-filled fondue.
RESOURCES
» Schweizer Mittelland Tourismus ( www.smit.ch ) The tourist office for the region around
Bern.
» Pays de Fribourg ( www.pays-de-fribourg.ch ) Provides info on Fribourg and the sur-
rounding region.

GETTING AROUND
» Train Frequent trains in all directions make getting around this part of Switzerland as
easy as it is to tear off the wrapper on your chocolate bar. Bern is an excellent hub.
» Car As always, a car will let you get off the beaten path and make visiting outlying at-
tractions - like cheese and chocolate factories - that much easier.
BE FOREWARNED
» Summer Basel is often the warmest part of Switzerland in summer and gets almost
sweaty on May days. Everybody heads out to cafes. Elsewhere the mild weather makes a
visit ideal as you can hike around the verdant countryside, especially Gruyères and
Neuchâtel.
