Bern, Jura & Mittelland
Easily one of the most charming capitals on the planet, Bern's 15th-century Old Town is
fairytale-like with its terraced stone buildings, covered arcades, clock towers and cobbled
streets. When Swiss politicians had to pick a capital it leapt out as the unthreatening choice:
Geneva was too French, Zürich too German. Bern was just right.
Tucked up against the French and German borders in the northwest corner of the country,
businesslike Basel straddles the majestic Rhine. The town is home to top-flight art galleries
and boasts an enchanting Old Town.
A far cry from the staggering Alpine scenes more readily associated with Switzerland, a
gentle corner in the west remains a 'secret'. From the evocative medieval towns of Fri-
bourg and Neuchâtel to gorgeous medieval villages such as Gruyères and St Ursanne, it
proffers sights and 'scapes off the tourist track.
