it… the extraordinary Italian-style ice cream, that is, at Nyon's legendary ice-cream
boutique Gelateria Venezia. The flavours tease tastebuds with creative combos such as ba-
nana split, After Eight and lots of chocolate variations. From Nyon's CGN boat jetty on
the lakefront, walk one block inland and look for the line outside the door.

Scenic Trips
The panorama of Lavaux vineyards staggering down to the lake is particularly fine from the back of a boat. CGN's
Fabuleux Vignobles de Lavaux (Fabulous Lavaux Vineyards) cruise departs from Lausanne twice daily (five times
daily between mid-June and mid-September), with stops in Lutry, Cully, Vevey, Chillon and Montreux. A
Lausanne-Montreux adult return ticket costs Sfr42.20.
Another fun and easy way to lose yourself in green vines and blue lake views is aboard the Lavaux Express
( www.lavauxexpress.ch ; adult/child Sfr13/5; Tue-Sun Apr-Oct), a tractor-pulled tourist train that chugs
through Lavaux' vineyards and villages. Pick from two routes: Lutry CGN boat pier up to the wine-growing villages
of Aran and Grandvaux (one hour return trip), or Cully pier to Riex, Espesses and Dézaley (1¼ hours).
Lavaux Wine Region
East of Lausanne, the mesmerising serried ranks of lush, pea-green vineyards that stagger
up the steep terraced slopes above Lake Geneva form the Lavaux wine region - suffi-
ciently magnificent to be a Unesco World Heritage Site. One-fifth of the Canton de Vaud's
wine is produced on these steep, gravity-defying slopes.
Walking between vines and wine tasting on weekends in local caveaux (wine cellars)
are key reasons to explore the string of 14 villages beaded along this fertile and wealthy,
40km stretch of shore. The tourist office in Montreux is the best place to pick up detailed
information and maps.
