Nyon
POP 18,800
Of Roman origin but with a partly Celtic name (the 'on' comes from dunon, which means
fortified enclosure), Nyon is a pretty lake town pierced at its hilltop-heart by the gleaming
white turrets of a fairytale château - a tasty lunch address.
Nyon's castle was started in the 12th century, modified 400 years later and now houses
the town's Musée Historique et des Porcelaines (History & Porcelain Museum; Place du
Château; adult/child Sfr8/free; 10am-5pm Tue-Sun) and, in its old stone cellars, the Caveau
des Vignerons (Place du Château; 2-9pm Fri & Sat, 11am-8pm Sun) where you can taste dif-
ferent Nyon wines by local producers. Pay Sfr20 to sample two reds and two whites with
a plate of charcuterie (cold meats).

L'AUBERGE DU CHÂTEAU $$
( 022 361 00 32; www.aubergeduchateau.ch ; Place du Château 8, Nyon; mains Sfr30-50; 8am-mid-
night, closed Sun Oct-Apr) No restaurant and cafe terrace has such a stunning view as this.
Filling the pretty pedestrian square in front of Nyon's pretty château, tables look out on
the Sleeping Beauty towers and lake beyond. Cuisine is Italian and creative - taglierini
with figs, simple homemade gnocchi and authentic pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven.
