AROUND LAUSANNE
Head out of Lausanne, and wine tasting and gastronomy suddenly become key dominators,
be it westbound along La Côte (the Coast) or eastbound towards jazz-famed Montreux
along a lakeshore pretty enough to be called the Swiss Riviera ( Click here ). For dedicated
wine buffs, a tasting pilgrimage to Lavaux's Unesco-protected vineyards is essential.
La Côte
Fantasy castles, imposing palaces and immaculately maintained medieval villages sprinkle
the Coast - the luxuriant lakeshore between Lausanne and Geneva where more than half of
the Canton de Vaud's wine, mostly white, is produced.
The train line from Geneva follows the course of the lake here, but arriving by a CGN
paddle steamer (try to catch one of the beautifully restored belle époque ones) is definitely
the more romantic option.
