midnight Mon-Fri, from 10am Sat & Sun; ) Something of an iconic address where Lausanne's
hip and trendy have long hung out, this place just to the south of the train station has
floppy lounges in the front and a tempting restaurant out back. The cuisine is creative -
think mozzarella and black tomato salad, smoked clams with peaches and an unbeatable
value pâte du jour (daily pasta dish) served with salad or soup. Wednesday is fondue day,
the first Tuesday of the month is always themed and the weekend ushers in brunch.

(Place de la Palud 10; salads Sfr13-25; 11.30am-6pm Tue, 9am-11.30pm Wed-Fri, 9am-7pm Sat) Old-
fashioned salads are the trademark of this retro cafe à l'ancienne in the Old Town. In-
gredients are locally sourced, often organic, and give a nod to the past in the shape of
dried figs and grains. Marie's salad with gooey, oven-baked tomme (a type of cheese) is to
die for.

( 021 312 64 89; Rue Cité-Devant 4; mains Sfr25-40; lunch & dinner Tue-Sat) One of just a
handful of restaurants behind the cathedral, the White Elephant is one of Lausanne's finest
dines. But what's staggeringly good value is its lunchtime plat du jour (dish of the day,
Sfr18.50) and creative meal-sized salads (between Sfr15 and Sfr25).

Eating venues Café St-Pierre and Café de Grancy are stylish drinking addresses too,

( www.bleu-lezard.ch ; Rue Enning 10; 7am-late Mon-Fri, from 8am Sat, from 9.30am Sun; ) This
corner bar and bistro with royal-blue paintwork and wicker chairs to match is an old fa-
vourite that never loses its appeal - day or night (or at weekends for brunch). Lunch
(mains cost between Sfr25 and Sfr30), including some great veggie options, is served until
3pm and when your feet wanna' jive to a live band, there's the basement music club La
Cave.
