L'ENTRECÔTE $$
| Steakhouse
( 022 310 60 04;
www.relaisentrecote.fr
;
Rue du Rhône 49; steak & chips Sfr46; lunch & dinner)
Key vocabulary to know before entering this timeless classic where everyone eats the
same dish is à
point
(medium),
bien cuit
(well done) and
saignant
(rare). Indeed the place
doesn't bother with menus. Sit down, say how you like your steak cooked and wait for it
arrive - two handsome servings of it (!) pre-empted by a green salad and accompanied by
perfectly crisp, skinny fries. Should you have room at the end of it all, the desserts are
justly raved about.
Plainpalais
OMNIBUS $$

; Rue de la Coulouvrenière 23; mains Sfr30-45; 11.30am-
midnight Mon-Fri, from 6pm Sat)
Don't be fooled or deterred by the graffiti-plastered facade of
this Rhône-side, industrial-inspired bar, cafe and restaurant. Inside a maze of retro, ro-
mantic and eclectic rooms seduces on first sight. Particularly popular is the back room (re-
servations essential) with carpet wall hangings and lots of lace.
AU GRÜTLI $$
| International
( 022 328 98 68;
www.cafedugrutli.ch
; Rue du Général Dufour 16; mains Sfr25-40; 8am-midnight
Mon-Thu, to 1am Fri, 4pm-1am Sat, to 11pm Sun)
As much cafe as cutting-edge restaurant, this
industrial-styled eating space with mezzanine seating is razor sharp. Indonesian lamb,
moussaka, scallops pan-fried with ginger and citrus fruits or Provençal-inspired chicken
are among its many international flavours.
CAFÉ DES BAINS $$
