grown exponentially in the past 20 years or more, based on the auspicious encounter
of rising niche tourism demands with favourable conditions from the supply side
(Coccossis and Tsartas, 2001; Tsartas et al., 2004). Such favourable conditions,
in our case, are provided by 'less favoured areas', such as Mediterranean moun-
tains, offering possibilities for the consumption of 'adventure', 'wildlife', 'nature',
'difference', 'authenticity', 'history', 'isolation', etc. Assisted by improved trans-
portation amenities and communication network capacities, increased leisure and
recreation options, better marketing and promotion strategies and new trends in en-
vironmentally and ethically correct tourism (Tsartas et al., 2004), 'less favoured
areas', including Mediterranean mountain destinations, are enjoying a marked rise
in demand for alternative tourism (Figure 7.6a,b). 'As the land is increasingly seen
