The distinctive culture of the Scottish Highlands - from bagpipes and High-
land dancing to the swing of the kilt and the spectacle of Highland games - has its
origins in the clan system that was remorselessly crushed following the Jacobite rebelli-
on of 1745. The playing of pipes and the wearing of Highland dress remained il-
legal until the revival of interest in all things Highland in the 19th century.
