Caledonian Pine Forest
In the wake of the last ice age, 10,000 years ago, much of the land that is now Scotland was
covered in extensive forests of Scots pine, birch, oak and rowan. Known as the Caledonian
Pine Forest, it has been mostly wiped out by thousands of years of human attrition -
chopped down for fuel and timber. Only about 1% of the original forest remains, but what
does is truly beautiful. The largest area of forest, at Rothiemurchus ( Click here ) in the
Cairngorms, harbours rare wildlife including capercaillie, crossbill and wildcat.
