Royal Deeside
The valley of the River Dee stretches from the Cairngorms mountains to Aberdeen. Its pic-
turesque upper reaches, ringed by rock-girt mountains and fringed with woods, has been
known as Royal Deeside ever since Queen Victoria fell in love with Balmoral Castle (

Nearby is Ballater village, its shopfronts adorned with royal crests boasting their status as
'suppliers to her majesty'.
