In-Depth Information
Spend your third day exploring the Cairngorms National Park. You can drive to (7)
Loch Morlich for pleasant woodland walks, and continue up to the (8) Cairngorm
Mountain Railway for a trip to the subarctic summit plateau. Stick to the B-roads as you
continue north from Aviemore, stopping to see the ospreys at the (9) Loch Garten nature
reserve. From here, the A9 leads easily back to Inverness.
FORT WILLIAM TO FORT WILLIAM Scenery Galore
This itinerary consists of two day trips from (1) Fort William . On day one, head west
along the A830 towards Mallaig: the famous 'Road to the Isles'. Stop at (2) Glenfinnan ;
visit the monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie before taking a walk along the glen to view
the railway viaduct that features in the Harry Potter films.
Continue west through delightful scenery and leave the main road at (3) Arisaig for the
B8008 (signposted ' Alternative Coastal Route'). This winding road leads past a series of
gorgeous white-sand beaches, with stunning views to the islands of Eigg and Rum.
The road ends at (4) Mallaig , a less-than-pretty fishing harbour, where the ferry de-
parts to Skye; time your trip to sample some local seafood before travelling back to Fort
William.
The following day drive south to (5) Glen Coe , and make the most of any good weath-
er by hiking into the hills. If a peaceful roadside picnic is more to your taste, continue
through the glen and turn south along gorgeous (6) Glen Etive . Return to Fort William
for the night, then continue towards the Cairngorms.
