Highland Games
The archetypal event of Scottish summer, the Highland Games - such as the Braemar Gath-
ering ( Click here ) - has its origins in after-battle celebratory dances and —trials of
strength among warring clansmen. Today the traditional events - putting the shot, throwing
the hammer and, of course, tossing the caber - have been joined by bagpipe playing and
Highland dancing competitions, and more modern additions such as 100m sprints and hill-
running races. But the atmosphere remains very much that of a family-friendly village fair,
with strong local support and plenty to see and do.
