4 CRAIGENDARROCH
Craigendarroch ( Click here ; 400m) - the ' rock of the oaks' - is on the edge of Bal-
later. You can go up after breakfast and be down for morning coffee, but you'll prob-
ably take longer. There are anthills in the spring sunshine, blueberries in late summer,
turning leaves of oak and larch in autumn and terrific views up and down the River
Dee all year.
5 FOREST OF GLEN TANAR
You can wander - for a day or a week, on foot or on a mountain bike - through the nat-
ive forest of Scots pine, alongside the Water of Tanar. If it's quiet, you will see cross-
bills, birds of prey, red and roe deer and red squirrels. You can stay in the forest or
head up onto the hill - Mt Keen, at the head of the glen, is a possibility.
