PERTHSHIRE
Pitlochry
POP 2564
Pitlochry, with its air smelling of the Highlands, is a popular stop on the way north and a
convenient base for exploring northern central Scotland. On a quiet spring evening it's a
pretty place with salmon jumping in the Tummel and good things brewing at the Moulin
Hotel. In summer the main street can be a conga line of tour groups, but get away from that
and it'll still charm you.
Detour:
Gleneagles
Deep in rural Perthshire, near the town of Auchterarder, one of Scotland's most famous lodgings can be found: the
Gleneagles Hotel ( 01764-662231; www.gleneagles.com ; d £435-535; ) . Not your typic-
al B&B, this is a no-holds-barred luxury spot with three championship golf courses, Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles −
often referred to as Scotland's best restaurant (open for dinner Tuesday to Saturday) − and a variety of extravagantly
elegant rooms and suites designed to cope with anything from a serious romantic splash-out to a royal family in exile.
Despite the imposing building and kilted staff snapping to attention, it's welcoming to non-VIPs and it's family-
friendly to boot, with lots of activities available. There's Gleneagles train station if you wish to arrive sustainably; if
not, limousine transfers are available. Check the website for deals. Glen-eagles is the venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup.
Sights
One of Pitlochry's attractions is its beautiful riverside ; the River Tummel is dammed here,
and you can watch salmon swimming (not jumping) up a fish ladder to the loch above.
BELL'S BLAIR ATHOL DISTILLERY
( 01796-482003; www.discovering-distilleries.com ; Perth Rd; tour £6; daily Apr-Oct, Mon-Fri Nov-
Mar) One of two distilleries around Pitlochry, this one is at the southern end of town. Tours
focus on whisky making and blending. More detailed private tours give you greater insights
and superior tastings.
