( 01786-471082; www.sruighlea.com ; 27 King St; s/d £40/60; ) This place feels like a secret
hideaway - there's no sign - but it's conveniently located smack bang in the centre of
town. You'll feel like a local staying here, and there are eating and drinking places practic-
ally on the doorstep. It's a B&B that welcomes guests with the kind of warmth that keeps
them returning.

( 01786-473730; www.garieldgh.com ; 12 Victoria Sq; d small/large £65/70) Though close to the
centre of town, Victoria Sq is a quiet oasis, with noble Victorian buildings surrounding a
verdant swathe of lawn. The Garfield's huge rooms, bay windows, ceiling roses and other
period features make it a winner. There's a great family room, and some rooms have
views to the castle towering above.

( 01786-471020; www.forthguesthouse.co.uk ; 23 Forth Pl; s/d £50/60; ) Just a couple of
minutes' walk from town, on the other side of the railway, this noble Georgian terrace of-
fers attractive and stylish accommodation at a fair price. The rooms are very commodious,
particularly the cute garret rooms with their coombed ceilings and good modern bath-
rooms. Substantially cheaper in low season.

STIRLING HIGHLAND HOTEL £££

( 01786-272722; www.pumahotels.co.uk ; Spittal St; r £130-190; ) The unusual Stirl-
ing Highland Hotel is a sympathetic refurbishment of the old high school. The curious
place still feels institutional in parts, but has great facilities that include pool, spa, gym,
sauna and squash courts. It's very convenient for the castle and Old Town, service is help-
ful and the comfortably refitted rooms have decent beds, though they vary widely in size.
Deluxe rooms offer the best views but aren't really worth the £50 upgrade. Prices are of-
ten lower than listed here.
