In-Depth Information
After a look at Braemar Castle or a walk up Creag Choinnich, a short drive east on the
Aberdeen road will bring you to (3) Balmoral Castle , the royal family's holiday home
(they usually visit in August). Allow at least two hours for exploring this fascinating royal
estate before continuing to the pretty village of (4) Ballater for an overnight stop.
Another scenic drive awaits on the following morning, on the famous A939 Cockbridge
to Tomintoul road, usually the first to be blocked with snow at the onset of winter. From
Tomintoul a B-road leads north to Bridge of Avon on the A95, which runs along the Spey
valley with whisky distilleries on every side, to reach (5) Dufftown , the whisky capital.
From here, it's a 90-minute drive via Elgin to (6) Inverness .
