EDINBURGH TO PITLOCHRY The History Trail
It's little more than a 30-minute drive along the M9 from (1) Edinburgh to the imposing
fortress of (2) Stirling Castle - approaching this way, along the ancient invasion route
from England, it's easy to see how Stirling controls the road to the north. Visiting the
castle and the nearby Bannockburn and Wallace Monument will take the best part of the
day, before you head east on the A91 to (3) St Andrews .
Allow a day for this old ecclesiastical capital, taking in the ruined cathedral, the castle
and perhaps a game of golf on a world-famous course. Cross the Tay Bridge and head for
(4) Glamis Castle , an imposing turreted pile famous for resident ghosts and royal con-
nections; don't forget the Angus Folk Museum near the entrance. The A94 leads back
west to (5) Scone Palace , the ancient crowning place of Scottish kings and the original
resting place of the Stone of Destiny.
A final 35-mile stretch north along the fast A9 road will bring you to (6) Pitlochry and
nearby Blair Castle, seat of the Duke of Atholl who heads Britain's only private army.
