main route north to Inverness along the valley of the River Tay. Its long and illustrious his-
tory is displayed in sumptuous suites and grand drawing rooms, where visitors also learn
about the Atholl Highlanders, Europe's only private standing army. Nearby is Killiecrankie,
a key battlefield in the Jacobite rebellion of the 18th century.
