The castle overlooks two great battlefields, Stirling Bridge (1297) and Bannockburn
(1314), both fought and won by the Scots against the English over possession of Stirl-
ing Castle. William Wallace's decisive victory at Stirling Bridge is powerfully com-
memorated in the National Wallace Monument.
