Stirling Castle Don't Miss
List
PETER YEOMAN, HISTORIC SCOTLAND'S HEAD OF CULTURAL
RESOURCES
1 GREAT HALL
The largest medieval banqueting hall ever built in Scotland (pictured far left), created
by James IV around 1503 as a spectacular setting for great state occasions. Recently
restored to its former glory with the only new hammerbeam oak roof built in Britain
since medieval times. Now a venue for concerts and dinners.
2 ROYAL PALACE
A sumptuous suite of apartments created by the young James V for his aristocratic
French bride, Mary of Guise. Re-created interiors feature period furniture, fittings, tex-
tiles and decoration, but the king's lodgings are left bare as they would have been after
his untimely death in 1542. These magnificent rooms are enlivened by the carved rep-
licas of oak roundels known as the Stirling Heads, and by a spectacular new tapestry
series in the Queen's Lodgings.
