In-Depth Information
George IV Bridge
Turn left along the gloomy defile of the Cowgate. The first bridge you pass under is Ge-
orge IV Bridge (built 1829-34). Although you can see only one arch here, there are nine
in total - one more is visible a block south at Merchant St, but the rest are hidden beneath
and between the surrounding buildings, as are the haunted vaults of South Bridge , fur-
ther west along Cowgate.
Real Mary King's Close
Beyond the bridge take the first left turn and climb up Old Fishmarket Close to emerge
once more into the Royal Mile. Across the street to the left is the Real Mary King's
Close . A guided tour of this historic building offers a fascinating look into 16th- and
17th-century Edinburgh life.
