FIGURE 4.3 GIMP red eye tool. Source: The GIMP 2.6.7.
the interaction game differs from the beginning and end because a new window is
shown, keeping the user accordingly away from the picture he or she opened.
GIMP steps
(0) Open the picture to adjust.
(1) Find the proper function in the menu bar or toolbar.
(a) The subtask involved was to look at the toolbar for a button resem-
bling the intended action. No such button was found. The buttons
were presented on a single layer (not in groups as in PS CS2).
(b) Then look through the menu items (especially in what seemed as most
related: Image, and Filters -
>
Enhance) for a relative command, here
it was “Red Eye Removal
...
” (see Figures 4.3 and 4.4). (A dialog
box appeared.)
(2) Adjust the threshold slider and click “OK.” There's a live preview showing
how the image will be affected after clicking “OK.” The dialog also says in
a tip, that “Manually selecting the eyes may improve the results.”
(3) Save the results in the file.
Alternatively the user can (2a) select the red eye using a selection tool (lasso or
elliptical), (2b) invoke the red eye removal dialog, (2c) set the threshold needed, and
click “OK.” This sequence should be repeated for other red eyes in the picture.
