allowing for a central composition gained a similar number of votes from both of the
tested groups.
26) Which window proportions do you like the most?
For this question, we tested the layout proportions presented in Figure 8.25.
Chinese
Hypothesis.
Square and double-square layout would be more preferred because they are widely
used in Asia (the symbols of Earth, Japanese buildings).
Results summary.
Exactly half of the users chose the 4:3 layout. Their motivations were based on habits
(the respondents were used to the usual screen proportions), aesthetics, but also on
practical reasons (they felt this proportion would display best most of the content).
The 16:9 layout was chosen by 35% of the respondents, mainly because it is suitable
for movies. Interestingly, about the square layout, with 15% of the answers, the
respondents felt the most strongly. It was chosen for its contained size and ease. On
the other hand, others regarded the square as having no focus, being too formal, too
basic, or even depressive. The double square was regarded as generally unfit. (See
Figure 8.26(a).)

Results summary.
The 16:9 proportion came first (50%), followed by 4:3 (40%). The first was chosen,
because it can present information aesthetically, even though the content is not always
