In-Depth Information
The photo we'll be going through in this chapter ranks as one of my all-time favorites. I
took it during one of my Photoshop workshops, and my best friend and assistant, Dave
Clayton, had to step in at the last minute and be the model for the attendees. A daunting task
for someone who had never modeled before, but taking on a character completely trans-
formed his confidence and enhanced the look of the photograph.
In this tutorial, we'll retouch a character portrait and add a new color and spotlight behind
our model. We'll do it all nondestructively, meaning that the color and spotlight will be ed-
itable so that you can later change the color and resize or even remove the spotlight.
This look requires three lights: one on either side of the model (I prefer to use strip boxes)
and one to the front (medium softbox or beauty dish) ( Figure 6.1 ), with the side (rim) lights
brighter than the light to the front by approximately one stop. The background is a gray
seamless roll, giving us an even and neutral starting point to which we can add a color.
