I owe the thingys technique to my friend Olaf Giermann, an incredible digital artist from
Germany.
The Never-Ending Lighting Rig
This technique has saved me more times than I care to remember. It's so called because
I can add more lights into a scene without actually having them there with me during the
photo shoot.
I'm not suggesting you use this technique instead of capturing the light in camera, but there
are times during shoots when for one reason or another (usually time constraints) it's not
possible.
At times like these my priority is to light what's most important, and then later in Photoshop
I can use my never-ending lighting rig to do the rest.
Figure 3.8 shows the image I'll be using this technique on. You can see straight away that
the lighting needs to be improved, as it's a struggle to see detail in the paintings on the back
wall.
