of all the lakes in the state of New Jersey are eutrophic or excessively enriched
by phosphorus (Figure 2-7), and countless lakeside communities wage a never-
ending battle to sustain their lake water quality as land development surrounds the
water body. In Minnesota, thousands of lakes have been affected by agriculture
and subsequent land development to produce the same change in trophic state,
so both regions share the common problem, as do most other lakes across the
United States.
