8.1 POROUS PAVEMENT SYSTEMS
Construction
Although there is no “standard” design for porous pavement systems, experience
over the past 30 years has evolved a strategy for design that was outlined in
Chapter 7. When a design progresses to a final set of construction drawings,
supporting construction guidance and specifications are also required. Rather
than providing a “model,” the framework for these specifications is provided in
this chapter.
1. The overall site should be evaluated for potential pervious pavement or
infiltration areas early in the design process, as effective pervious pavement
design requires consideration of grading.
2. The soil through which infiltration is to occur must have physical and
chemical characteristics (such as appropriate cation-exchange capacity, organic
content, clay content, and infiltration rate) that are adequate for proper infiltra-
tion duration and treatment of urban runoff for the protection of groundwater
beneficial uses.
3. Orientation of the parking bays along the existing contours will significantly
reduce the need for cut and fill.
