The technology was initially brought to the United States largely through the
pioneering work of one engineer, Charles Miller [20], in the late 1990s. His
projects are numerous and nationwide, but one of the best known is the green
roof on the Chicago City Hall (Figure 7-22), which has proven to be a highly
visible example of the system. Many of the concepts and illustrations in the
following pages are drawn from his experience. Of course, like every new idea,
