1 Roman Agora
ANCIENT SITE
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
Enter the Romans' civic centre through the well-preserved Gate of Athena Archegetis ,
which is flanked by four Doric columns. It was erected sometime during the 1st century
AD and financed by Julius Caesar. At this partly excavated site, you can see the founda-
tions of several structures, including a 1st-century, 68-seat public latrine to the right of the
entry, and a propylon (entrance) at the southeastern corner. The Fethiye Djami mosque on
the northern side of the Agora is one of the city's few surviving reminders of Ottoman
times. (

Top Tips
There are a number of entrances, but the most convenient is the northern entrance on Adrianou, easily accessible
from the metro and Monastiraki's flea market.
Save time for the museum - it is packed with superb ancient artefacts.
Have a photo op at the Temple of Hephaestus - it's one of the best-preserved temples in Greece and you can get
quite close to it.
Hours change frequently. Call ahead to check: sometimes the Agora is open til 8pm.
Take a Break
The site of the Agora today is a lush, refreshing change from congested city streets. To sit a spell, exit the northern
entrance onto Adrianou, where you can enjoy a coffee or a meal at Kuzina ( Click here ) or Dioskouri ( Click here
