Acropolis Museum
The grand modernist Acropolis Museum at the southern
foot of the Acropolis displays the monument's surviving
treasures. While the collection covers the Archaic and Ro-
man periods, the emphasis is on the Acropolis of the 5th
century BC, considered the apotheosis of Greece's artistic
achievement. The spectacular museum cleverly showcases
layers of history: subterranean ruins are visible below, and
the Acropolis rises above, thus allowing visitors to see the
masterpieces in context.
