Museums
With the embarrassment of riches that is Athens' and Greece's history, museums
are superb showcases of all things Greek. On a short visit you'll have to choose
among them, but no matter where you go you won't be disappointed.
Archaeological Museums
Many of Greece's most precious statues and artefacts have been collected in Athens for
their own protection. In well-lit, temperature-controlled environments these treasures will
be able to survive millennia more. The powerhouse is the National Archaeological Mu-
seum, the world's best depository of ancient Greek art and artefacts. The Acropolis Mu-
seum, opened to much-deserved fanfare in 2009, is a splendid example of showcasing an-
cient art in a thoroughly innovative, modern setting.
Art Museums
Most of Athens' archaeological museums could equally be characterised as art museums,
what with their troves of Greek and Roman sculptures, pottery and jewellery. But the city
also has several museums dedicated to more modern forms: painting, etching, contempor-
ary art forms such as installations, and rotating exhibitions of international shows. They
also often have educational programs and lecture or music series from time to time.
Cultural Museums
Some museums, particularly in the Plaka and Monastiraki neighbourhoods, focus on more
traditional Greek culture. From puppet making to regional dress and musical instruments -
pick your poison. The annexes of the Benaki Museum show everything from Greek and
Islamic culture to modern art.
