Temple of Olympian Zeus
You can't miss this striking marvel, smack in the centre of
Athens. Also known as the Olympeion, it is the largest
temple in Greece and, as the name suggests, was dedicated
to the supreme god Zeus. Peisistratos began building the
temple in the 6th century BC on the western bank of the
Ilissos River, but construction stalled due to a lack of
funds. A succession of leaders tried to finish the job; Had-
rian finally completed the task in AD 131.
