Greek Regional Specialties
If you'd like a more structured shopping experience, head straight to To Panto-
poleion ( 210 323 4612; Sofokleous 1, Omonia) , an expansive store selling traditional food
products from all over Greece. Find everything from Santorini capers to Cretan
rusks, jars of goodies, and Greek wines and spirits.
Quirky Taverna
There's no signage at Diporto Agoras ( 210 321 1463; cnr Theatrou & Sokratous; plates €5-6;
8am-6pm Mon-Sat, closed 1-20 Aug) , one of the dining gems of Athens. Double doors
lead to a rustic cellar, where there's also no menu. The speciality is revythia (chick-
peas), followed by grilled fish and washed down with wine from giant barrels. Often-
erratic service is part of the appeal.
Hot Contemporary Art
After lunch, hit two of Athens' most innovative modern art galleries, which promote
young, emerging local and visiting artists: Qbox Gallery ( 211 119 9991; www.qbox.gr ;
Armodiou 10; noon-6pm Tue-Fri, to 4pm Sat) and Andreas Melas & Helena Papadopoulos
Gallery ( 210 325 1881; http://melaspapadopoulos. com; Epikourou 26, cnr Korinis, Psyrri;
noon-6pm Tue-Fri, to 4pm Sat) .
Late-Night Dinner
The meat market might sound like a strange place to go for a meal, but the tavernas,
such as Papandreou ( 213 008 2242; Aristogitonos 1; mains €7-8; 24hr) , are an Athenian
institution, turning out huge quantities of tasty, traditional fare for everyone from
hungry market workers to late-night partiers.
