In-Depth Information
ors, bars around the city are falling over themselves to showcase intriguing regional
brews. Ask your server what's local on the draft list, and be sure to look out for favorite
Vancouver-area beer makers including Central City Brewing (ESB recommended) and
Storm Brewing (Black Plague Stout). The bars of Gastown, Main St and Commercial
Dr are especially in tune with the BC beer scene. For more information on the city's
beery happenings, visit www.camravancouver.ca .
Wine & Liquor
It's not just beer that has raised the bar recently in Vancouver. The city's drinking scene
has improved immeasurably from the days when a badly made Manhattan was the
height of sophistication. Grape-based quaffing kicked off the revolution, and several
cool wine bars have popped up in recent years to satisfy thirsty oenophiles. Wine fans
will now find plenty to crow about at bars around town. Cocktails are also set to im-
press, with a selection of taste-tastic little drinking joints, from traditional to quirky,
joining the nightlife fray. Craft distilleries are the latest wave; look out for newly
opened spots on your visit.
Clubbing
While downtown's Granville Strip draws the barely clad booties of mainstream club-
bers, there are other, less limelight-hogging areas catering to just about every pecca-
dillo. Cover charges run from $5 to $20 ('the ladies' often get in free before 11pm) and
dress codes are frequently smart-casual - ripped jeans and sportswear will not endear
you to the bouncers who are just looking for people to send home. Bring ID: most clubs
accept over-19s but some want you to be over 25. You can put yourself on the VIP list
(no waiting, no cover) at the websites of individual clubs or via www.clubvibes.com
and www.clubzone.com .
Alternative Night Out
Pick up a copy of the free Georgia Straight weekly, the city's best listings newspaper,
for additional night-out ideas. If you're stuck, consider the first Monday of the month at
the Railway Club ( Click here ) for the Hard Rock Miners group singalong; the monthly
Green Drinks social mixer at Steamworks brewpub ( Click here ) ; or just scratch your
pinball itch with Pub 340's roomful of machines ( Click here ) .
