CLIMATE CHANGE & TRAVEL
Every form of transport that relies on carbon-based fuel generates CO2, the main
cause of human-induced climate change. Modern travel is dependent on aero-
planes, which might use less fuel per kilometre per person than most cars but
travel much greater distances. The altitude at which aircraft emit gases (includ-
ing CO2) and particles also contributes to their climate change impact. Many
websites offer 'carbon calculators' that allow people to estimate the carbon emis-
sions generated by their journey and, for those who wish to do so, to off set the
impact of the greenhouse gases emitted with contributions to portfolios of
climate-friendly initiatives throughout the world. Lonely Planet off sets the car-
bon footprint of all staff and author travel.
GETTING AROUND VANCOUVER
Downtown Vancouver is easily navigated on foot, with lots of transit services (bus and
SkyTrain) for those hopping to other neighborhoods.
TransLink
TransLink ( www.translink.bc.ca ) oversees public bus, SkyTrain light rail and SeaBus
commuter boat services. Its website has handy route maps and a trip-planning tool.
Tickets bought on any of these services are valid for up to 90 minutes of travel on the
entire network. One-zone tickets cost adult/child $2.75/1.75, two-zone tickets $4/2.75
and three-zone tickets $5.505/3.75. An all-day, all-zone DayPass costs $9.75/7.50. After
6:30pm or on weekends or holidays, all trips are classed as one-zone fares and cost
$2.75/1.75.
Books of 10 FareSaver tickets (adult one/two/three zones $21/31.50/42, child all
zones $17.50) are a good way to save if you're planning multiple trips. They are sold at
many convenience stores and drugstores throughout the city.
Children under five travel for free on all transit services.
At the time of research, fare gates were being installed in SkyTrain stations for the in-
troduction of a new card ticketing system called Compass, currently scheduled to start
between late 2013 and early 2014; check the Translink website before you arrive for the
latest information.
