In-Depth Information
September
Summer is waning but there are usually still plenty of golden sunny days
as the leaves start turning. The end of the month especially is many Van-
couverites' favorite time of year.
Vancouver International Fringe Festival
One of the city's biggest arts events, the Fringe ( Click here ) features a lively 11-day
roster of wacky theatrics from the second week of September, drawing thousands to
large, small and unconventional Granville Island venues. Expect short plays and com-
edy revues, with tickets typically around the $10 mark.
Vancouver International Film Festival
This giant, highly popular film festival ( www.viff.org ) celebrates smaller, art-house
movies and international hidden gems. Its 17-day roster from late September covers
hundreds of screenings of local, national and international films, and features gala
events and industry schmoozes. Book ahead.
October
It's time to start heading back inside as the rains roll back into town and
locals dig out their rainproof jackets for the rest of the year. Some sunny
days remain though, illuminating the remainder of the fall foliage.
Vancouver International Writers Fest
A six-day, late-October literary event, the Writers Fest ( www.writersfest.bc.ca ) offers
Granville Island readings, workshops and forums with dozens of local and international
scribblers. Past guests have included Salman Rushdie and Margaret Atwood.
Parade of the Lost Souls
A spectral Day of the Dead celebration with a torch-lit procession of spookily dressed
performers moving through the streets of East Vancouver. Parade of the Lost Souls
( www.publicdreams.org ) is Vancouver's main Halloween event.
