Vancouver Folk Music Festival
Kitsilano's Jericho Beach is the venue for the sunny, weekend-long Folk Music Festival
( www.thefestival.bc.ca ), featuring alfresco shows from folk to world music and bey-
ond. Don your sunblock and join the 30,000-odd hippies and hipsters at one of Van-
couver's most enduring music events.
Celebration of Light
One of North America's largest fireworks competitions, the Celebration of Light
( www.hondacelebrationoflight.com ) takes place in English Bay over three nights in late
July and early August. Competing countries (which change every year) put on their
most spectacular displays.
August
It's the peak of summer, which means locals are in full sun-kissed patio
mode and a tasty menu of local-grown fruit - from blueberries to peaches
- hits the city.
Pride Week
A multiday kaleidoscope of gay-, lesbian- and bisexual-friendly shows, parties and con-
certs culminating in western Canada's largest pride parade ( Click here ) . Typically the
first Sunday of August, this saucy West End mardi gras draws up to 500,000 people
with its disco-beat floats and gyrating, scantily clad locals.
Pacific National Exhibition
From the third week of August onwards, this ever-popular country fair ( Click here ) has
evolved into a three-week community party of live music, family-friendly perform-
ances (check out the Superdogs) and artery-clogging food stands: miss the minidonuts
at your peril. Don't forget the fairground, with its kick-ass wooden roller coaster.
