This entertainingly kitsch tower block sleepover - think pink carpets, flowery so-
fas and maritime memorabilia - offers well-maintained, perfectly shipshape, basic
budget rooms. Like boat cabins, they are lined with wooden cupboards and include mi-
crowaves, refrigerators and tiny private bathrooms. Rates include use of an outdoor
pool, laundry facilities and, of course, a large display of petrified wood.
Aimed primarily at longer-stay residents, there are good deals here if you're sticking
around for a while.

This 1895 wood-built
mansion has a lived-in, homey feel, complete with a charming veranda and stained-
glass windows. The good-value rooms vary greatly in size and some have shared bath-
rooms. The recommended top floor 'Charles Room' is quaint and quiet with a patio
overlooking downtown that's shared with the neighbouring room. Cooked breakfast is
included, along with free off-street parking.
The Windsor is on a quiet residential street with plenty of restaurants in the vicinity.
The Canada Line's Broadway-City Hall station is a short walk away, so you can be in
the heart of downtown in less than 10 minutes.

One of Canada's largest
hostels looks like a Victorian hospital from the outside but has a great location if you're
here for the sun-kissed Jericho Beach vibe; downtown is a 40-minute bus ride away.
Basic rooms make this the least palatial Vancouver HI, but it has a large kitchen, bike
rentals and a recently revamped cafe. Dorms are also larger here. Book ahead for
private rooms.
For many, this hostel delivers more of a vacation than its downtown siblings due to
its beach proximity. Unlike other HI's, rates do not include continental breakfast. Take
