; Burrard) This swish boutique property has a contemporary take on style that will
appeal to urban sophisticates. It's also handily located in the heart of downtown. Bold
modern artworks add a splash of color to the atmospheric, subtly decorated rooms, and
there's a good on-site restaurant, an indoor pool and a squash court to keep you busy.
Unusually for Vancouver, there are also some smoking rooms available. And if you
really want to show your class, hop in the hotel's Jaguar: it'll take you anywhere you
want as part of the hotel's morning downtown limo service. When you finally get back
to the hotel, you can play a little pitch-and-put on the outdoor minigolf course. Excel-
lent service.

( 604-694-0600; www.urban-hideaway.com ; 581 Richards St; d with shared bathroom $109,
suite $159; ; Granville) This cozy but fiendishly well-hidden guesthouse is a
word-of-mouth favorite in the heart of the city. Tuck yourself into one of the comfy
rooms (the loft is recommended) or spend your time in the lounge areas downstairs.
There are laundry facilities, a computer that's free to use and loaner bikes that are also
gratis. Bathrooms are mostly shared; the loft's bathroom is private.
The hosts are highly welcoming and full of suggestions for what to do in the area if
you need some ideas.

10) Moda will never be in the big league of fancy local boutiques, but that's fine be-
cause it has two key things going for it: an excellent heart-of-the-city location and bet-
ter rates than its posher siblings. The mostly small rooms combine mod, 'cheap chic'
flourishes with quirky heritage holdovers (the building opened in 1908). Light sleepers
should avoid lower floors.
If you're traveling with your pooch, there are also some dog-friendly rooms here
($15 extra per night). Alternatively, if you're missing your pet back home, pad down to
the excellent on-site wine bar for a consoling nightcap.
