In-Depth Information
you choose from a menu of comfort pastas, Mexican specialties and gourmet burgers -
the Teriyaki salmon burger is recommended, washed down with a hoppy bottle of Salt
Spring Pale Ale. There's live music every night in summer; on balmy nights, it feels
like everyone on the island is hanging out here.
This is also a good spot for breakfast (the hearty Tree House Breakfast is excellent).
RESTAURANT HOUSE PICCOLO WEST COAST $$
( www.housepiccolo.com ; 108 Hereford Ave, Salt Spring Island; mains $14-24; 5-10pm Wed-Sun)
White-tableclothed dining, along with Salt Spring's best wine list, makes this a popular
spot among islanders looking for a special night out. Expect lots of local and regional
ingredients of the seasonal variety, and there's usually some sumptuous seafood avail-
able: go for the perfect crab cakes and some pan-seared local scallops. Then, if you're
really feeling greedy, consider the lamb shank.
HUMMINGBIRD PUB PUB
( www.hummingbirdpub.com ; 47 Sturdies Bay Rd, Galiano Island; mains $8-12) Sup ale with the
locals on the patio here and you'll hear all the latest island gossip. Make sure you save
room for a fruity Galiano Island Rum Punch chaser. There's plenty of pub grub to keep
you glued to your perch for the evening, too, and the pub runs its own bus around the
island if you've somehow forgotten how to find your bed.

SALT SPRING ADVENTURE CO KAYAKING
( 250-537-2764, 877-537-2764; www.saltspringadventures.com ; 124 Upper Ganges Rd, Salt
Spring Island; tours from $50) It's not all about culinary-related hedonism on Salt Spring.
If you crave some activity (especially if you've overindulged in samples at the Saturday
Market), touch base with Salt Spring Adventure Co. The friendly folks here can kit you
out for a kayak tour around Ganges Harbour that will make it seem like you're a milli-
on miles from bustling downtown Vancouver.
This operator also rents bikes if you feel like exploring the island on two wheels.
